Bedrocks underwater drones will map seabeds
24.08.2021 09:52The American startup company Bedrock has developed a platform where they use electric underwater drones to map seabeds.
Bedrock's platform is primarily developed so that wind power companies can find suitable places to build offshore wind farms. The system uses an electrically powered underwater drone that is most similar in appearance to a torpedo. The drone has a lithium-ion battery that can drive the drone for 12 - 24 hours at 2 - 3 knots while scanning seabed at depths of up to 300 meters.
According to the company, the advantage of Bedrock's system compared to other similar systems for mapping seabeds is the drone's small format. The format means that no large ships or expeditions are required for the mapping, which means that it can be both cheaper and faster to map seabeds with Bedrock's system.
Apple sued - and has to pay 300 million dollars
16.08.2021 09:33A court in Texas has ruled that Apple must pay 300 million dollars, for using wireless technology from the company Optis in the iPhone.
Unexpectedly, Apple is not entirely happy with this and writes in a statement that Optis does not manufacture its own products but that Optis' business concept seems to be to sue other companies for patent infringement. They also wrote that they will continue to contradict the unreasonable fees that Optis demands for the patents they own.
Optis makes no products and its sole business is to sue companies using patents they accumulate. We will continue to defend against their attempts to extract unreasonable payments for patents they acquire.
Exactly how Apple will proceed now, is unclear at the time of writing.
Cryptohackers are offered $ 500,000 in bug rewards
16.08.2021 09:27The Chinese cryptocurrency platform Poly Network now offers the hacker who stole $ 610 million from the company's users a reward of $ 500,000. The condition, however, is that the hacker returns the entire amount that was stolen. Poly Network calls the reward a so-called "bug bounty", rewards that are paid to outsiders who find bugs in a company's system.
Whether the hacker, whom Poly Network calls "Mr. White Hat", has accepted the offer is still unknown. It was last week that Poly Network's service was attacked, which resulted in the hacker being able to move cryptocurrencies corresponding to more than SEK 5 billion from Poly Network's users.
However, several of the addresses to which the currencies were moved were blocked, which led to the hacker starting to return some of the stolen cryptocurrencies. On Friday, cryptocurrencies equivalent to $ 340 million had been returned to Poly Network's platform.

Portrait mode for video, new set of filters and ProRes awaits the new iPhone models
11.08.2021 08:36According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this year's iPhone models will have three new camera features specifically for video. The first should enable portrait mode in videos. Portrait mode was introduced with the iPhone 7 Plus in 2016 but can only be used on photos. The function can put a person or object in sharp focus while the background is blurred to create a so-called bokeh effect. Apple is said to call the new Cinematic Video feature. Just as with portrait mode for images, data from several cameras and LiDAR must be used to create the effect, users must be able to choose how much blur they want.
The second feature is to give users a better way to control the colors and highlights of their videos. It should be possible to choose between different styles. Among other things, two that give videos a warmer or colder color temperature, while white areas remain neutral. The function should differ from previous filters as it uses artificial intelligence to identify people and objects in videos, the current one applies the same style to the entire video.
The third news is that this year's iPhone will be able to record in the ProRes format. It would give users, like how ProRAW did for images last year, more control over what even video looks like after it is filmed.
