Bedrocks underwater drones will map seabeds

The American startup company Bedrock has developed a platform where they use electric underwater drones to map seabeds.

Bedrock's platform is primarily developed so that wind power companies can find suitable places to build offshore wind farms. The system uses an electrically powered underwater drone that is most similar in appearance to a torpedo. The drone has a lithium-ion battery that can drive the drone for 12 - 24 hours at 2 - 3 knots while scanning seabed at depths of up to 300 meters.

According to the company, the advantage of Bedrock's system compared to other similar systems for mapping seabeds is the drone's small format. The format means that no large ships or expeditions are required for the mapping, which means that it can be both cheaper and faster to map seabeds with Bedrock's system.
